Data Security and Cloud Workflows in Modern Surveying
Why secure data flow matters
Surveying in the 2020s is a multifaceted business, one that requires state-of-the-art digital infrastructure as much as it does competent fieldwork. In addition, there needs to be a seamless and transparent relationship between these different facets. Without high quality survey software, data security and reliability may be compromised. Topcon estimates that missing, inaccurate, and incompatible construction data costs the industry billions of pounds due to needing to conduct reworks alongside breakdowns in collaborations.
Principles of a robust workflow
- Single source of knowledge: one consistent dataset for the whole team.
- Role-based access: edit and access just what you need.
- Constant encryption: protected whilst in transit and when inactive.
- Audit trails: everyone’s changes are traced and accounted for.
- Offline ease: work on the project without Wi-Fi and synchronise the next time you connect.
From field to office without friction
Topcon Field enables consistency and transparency between the various departments of a project team by uploading data collected from instruments like total stations and GNNS kits into a collective cloud. Through Google Earth you can access an accurate 2D map layout of your site which you can adjust with up-to-date edits and annotations and export all information securely to CAD applications to create 3D models of your projects.
All this data can then be extracted, viewed, and amended accordingly by anyone with access to the files, meaning that field, office, instrument, and machine work is knitted together neatly and cohesively. Such cohesion keeps everyone on the same page, thus helping businesses to save money in the process.
Practical tips for small and mid‑size teams
Standardise file and folder names before work starts for simplicity.
Set user permissions by role (e.g. surveyor, engineer, subcontractor) for operational efficiency and traceability.
Automate backups and test recovery – don’t leave it to chance!
Keep a simple change log to track revisions pushed to site.
Compliance and client confidence
Data security and project transparency are profoundly more significant for public works, as well as larger private schemes, not just to maintain the integrity of the project, but to protect your credibility as well. Clients expect you to operate using survey software (like Topcon Field) that guarantees accurate planning and secure encryptions to ease any procurement friction and enables a sense of reliability. In addition, this transforms your handover into one coherent document as opposed to a collection of mismatching files.
Topcon Field: New Features and Improvements (v10)
Topcon recently launched version 10.0 of Field with a host of new features to make it even easier for you to utilise the software in order to complete your projects to the highest standard. Web Feature Service (WFS) is now supported for improved staking, layers can now be sorted into groups to minimise cluttering and maximising organisation, and TILT is included in Hybrid Positioning mode for further support. In addition, there are significant and notable improvements to 3D model, point clouds, and DWG handling – as well as to Starpoint/Skybridge. FAQs
Is cloud too slow for big datasets?
Not with sensible sync rules. Push only the files the site team needs, keep archives in the background, and ensure a decent 4G/5G connection or site Wi‑Fi where possible.
What if the signal drops?
Good apps cache locally and queue changes to upload later. Make sure the team knows how to check sync status so nothing gets missed.
Bottom line
Given the ever-growing digital landscape of today’s world, it’s absolutely vital to ensure that your projects are carried out with a secure data workflow that provides your projects with stability, protects client data, and increases delivery speed whilst saving money at the same time.
